Alders are among the first trees to sprout up when a forest has been disturbed and they grow with abandon here in the Pacific Northwest. The hard wood is used for furniture, firewood, flooring, carvings and smoking meat. Flexible saplings can be formed into bows, snowshoes, and rustic fences and arches for the garden. The bark is high in tannin and can be used to make dye. Extracts from the bark and leaves are believed to treat chills.
